Katie was assigned to HMS Vulture during WW2. The station was run entirely by Wrens and was located close to Treligga (2km west of Delabole) near Padstow, Cornwall. It was a target range for Seafire aeroplanes (the Royal Navy version of the Spitfire).
Having an emergency landing strip, they had their share of emergency landings, where they would have to assist RAF pilots and their crew (who sometimes extended their stay to enjoy the hospitality!).
Katie said they had a Rhode Island Red chicken who the named Stalinavitch! However, they had to plead with the cook not to make a caserole of Stalinavitch!
