Lawrence was part of the 1939 British Expeditionary Force and took part in the Dunkirk evacuation (Operation Dynamo) in 1939. He went on to serve the remainder of the war (along with his brothers, George and Edward, shown in the photo in his portrait). He served on HMS Eagle (just prior to it being sunk) among other Royal Navy vessels.
