Leonard Trewin

Portrait picture of Veteran Leonard Trewin

8th (Warwickshire) Midlands Parachute Battalion

At the tender age of 15, Len joined the Home Guard for 3 years prior to joining the Parachute Regiment. On the 14th of August 1944, he was dropped into Normandy and then marched on to the Saine. Later, Len was involved in another Para drop over the Rhine where the Paras liberated a labour camp. This is where he met his future wife! She was a German national who was sent to the camp because she refused to work in an a munitions factory.

They fell in love, married and eventually settled back in England.

Len had a funny story about leaving for work one morning. His new wife asked what he would like for supper; he said, "I fancy Welsh Rabbit!" When he came home from work his young wife was somewhat distressed and he asked her what was wrong. She said, "I've been round every butcher's in the village and none of them had a Welsh Rabbit!!!" (Hence the rabbit in the lower, left hand side in the portrait holding a leek!)!
