Reg landed on Gold Beach in Normandy on D-day +4. His battalion then moved up through France and Holland. At the Battle of the Bulge, he was ordered back with the rest of the battalion from the forward dugouts to rest.
During this time, he and a couple of his chums got lost in the Reichswald Forest where they came across a cabin in the woods. The cabin was dimly lit and they could hear voices inside that they couldn't recognise. They were not English voices (nor German, French or Italian). They crept a little closer and finally realised that they were Scottish!!
Nel has incorporated a cabin in Reg's portrait as this was one of the tails Reg spoke of about his experiences during the war!
